Kersal Moor Day 2011

Kersal Moor Day

Saturday 27th August.

The Friends of Kersal Moor organised another Open Day on the Moor. The Society had its usual stall. Unfortunately only two members, Amanda and Peter, were able to attend.

The morning was poor and rainy but at 1 o’clock the Sun came out and a lovely afternoon developed.

We renewed old acquaintances such as Daryl and Alice, and made new friends. Alice was dressed as a female patient, with apron and shawl, from Prestwich Asylum in about 1880.

A picture of the old Odeon cinema on our display board drew a lot of attention and reminiscences. Many people remembered the Dance Hall above the cinema and having dancing lessons there.

Another lady was interested in our Whitefield material. She had written her thesis  about the town while a student in Liverpool – ‘Whitefield – A Lancashire Village”.

The bran tub exerted its usual allure over the children and was well patronised.

The new rotating display stand, courtesy of the New Percivals newsagents , proved easy to use and was a hit with the visitors. It was loaded with postcards and books.

All in all, a successful afternoon.

Many thanks for supporting our event. My only regret is that as an organiser I didn’t spend enough time chatting with you all. I do hope to get a chance soon at one of the events and perhaps I’ll try to put another talk together for the future.
