Pringle Walk
The old path around the church defining the ancient oval churchyard, historically known as ‘The Bunks’, has been renamed ‘Pringle Walk’ in honour of our former Chairman. As you know Ian was a tireless campaigner on Heritage issues and an extremely knowledgeable Local Historian. The Mayor of Bury, Cr. Jane Black, officially opened the Walk on Tuesday 26th February. The event was attended by a large crowd of Ian’s friends who gathered in the Church Inn afterwards.
The wording on the Plaque …
‘Pringle Walk is named after the local historian Ian Pringle (1950-2018). Ian’s knowledge and passion about the history of Prestwich, St. Mary’s Church, Heaton Park and Philips Park, Whitefield, and his books were the result of lifelong study. Ian’s efforts laid a legacy for Prestwich Clough, the flower park and the St. Mary’s and Poppythorn conservation areas, for which residents will always be indebted. Ian took photographs of Prestwich throughout his life and these captured permanently that has now disappeared. His archive of local history materials held at Chetham’s Library, Manchester. This walk next to the church he so admired and a landscape he loved, is named as a fitting memorial to him.’
A very fitting memorial to Ian. We have been privileged to have known him and valued his wealth of knowledge about Prestwich. He will be a great loss to Prestwich.
